An East Coast dairy farm takes advantage of provincial incentives to help make the shift to cleaner energy.

The Nova Scotia Community Feed-in Tariff (COMFIT) program was announced in 2011. As part of the province’s effort to move away from carbon-based energy projects, this program aimed to incentivize community investments in renewable energy by guaranteeing the rate paid for energy fed back into the grid. Upon learning about the program, the Blois family of Courthouse Hill Farm –a dairy operation in Gore, Nova Scotia– decided to make a move.

Taking part in the COMFIT program presented this seventh and eighth-generation farming family with an opportunity to diversify their on-farm revenues and contribute to the province’s shift to green energy by building a biogas facility. Courthouse Hill Farm is located in proximity to the Halifax Regional Municipality, providing the Bloises with a unique advantage of access to both agricultural and municipal organic waste.

To make the best of their opportunity, they wanted to find technologies that handled the widest possible range of organic wastes to generate maximum energy output. Their solution came from installing Fitec’s Self-Cleaning Digester and High Solids Pasteurizing system.

Operational since 2017, the biogas plant at Courthouse Hill Farm is one of more than 100 community partnerships established with the province of Nova Scotia through the COMFIT program. With maximum up-time and no shut-downs required for maintenance, their project has contributed over 1500 kWh of energy back to the grid.
